What is a veterinary ophthalmologist?

A board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist (DACVO) is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) who has successfully completed a 3 - 4 year residency training program specializing in diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of eye disease in a variety of animal species.  To achieve board certification, a veterinarian must be evaluated and successfully complete examinations by the AVMA-recognized American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO).   Board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists typically have at least twelve years of college-postdoctoral training.
